Baby Mama

A perfectly harmless light comedy with a few good laughs. Tina Fey is underutilized in her own script, too often left playing emotional romantic scenes to sustain the plot. Amy Poehler has her moments but the young white trash charter is a stretch for her. She could pull off the part in a three minute Saturday Night Live skit but sustaining the part in a feature length film is too much. The construction is loose, playing toward gags that aren’t particularly well integrated in the story. Having recently scene Fey’s Date Night I have to wonder when she will get a film script worthy of her talents. Or is her best place in film ultimately to play the secondary character, as in Mean Girls?
