The Heartbreak Kid (2007)

The Heartbreak Kid has all the elements one expects from its writing and directing team, the Farrelly brothers: characters who are shallow and dumb, toilet humor, a tone that presents acts of true cruelty as light comedy, and not much plot coherence.   All of which it to say, this movie wasn't as terrible as I expected. It certainly isn't special, or even good, but it is pleasantly watchable in the way a sitcom passes the time and then can be forgotten entirely.  At the end of a hard week, sometimes that is enough.

Salt: (2010)

Angelia Jolie is fun to watch but this is a poor man’s Bourne Identity in every way. If you want to see how not to write a script, see this film. For an action movie to work, the plot doesn’t need to make sense. A film can just take a silly premise and go with it. But if a film has a ridiculous plot, like this one does, don’t explain it: establish the basics information quickly and move on to the action. Salt's sin is thinking it has a clever plot when it doesn’t. The result is lots of tedious explication, particularly in the first half hour.
